Brand Messaging Research
Brand messaging research should tell you more than which tagline people like. We study the gap between what your audience believes and what is true, then test which framing actually changes beliefs and behavior.
The problem behind the problem.
Many messaging decisions are made in a conference room. A team debates three headlines, picks the one leadership prefers, and launches. When results disappoint, the explanation is usually creative execution or media spend. The deeper issue is often that nobody established what the audience currently believes, which beliefs are blocking action, and whether the chosen message addresses them at all. Preference surveys add little, because people are poor predictors of what will persuade them.
The gap between an organization's real value and public perception can be wide. We have researched exactly that gap for an industry whose genuine benefits were poorly understood by consumers, in order to ground an education campaign in evidence rather than assumption. That work showed how much depends on framing: whether a benefit is expressed as a gain or an avoided loss, whether it is anchored to something familiar, and whether the messenger is trusted. Small framing choices carry large consequences.
How we deliver brand messaging research.
- 01Observe
Map current beliefs
We conduct interviews and open-ended research with target audiences to understand what they believe about your category, your brand and the behavior you want. We pay close attention to the language people use, the misconceptions they hold and the sources they trust, since these shape which messages will land and which will be dismissed.
- 02Signal
Quantify the perception gap
We design a survey that measures beliefs, attitudes and intentions with validated items where possible, then segment respondents by behavior and belief rather than demographics alone. The analysis shows which beliefs most strongly predict the behavior you care about, so messaging targets the beliefs that matter rather than the ones that are easiest to address.
- 03Design
Build framed message variants
We write message variants that each test a specific hypothesis: gain versus loss framing, social proof, concrete examples versus abstract claims, different messengers and different calls to action. Each variant is tied to a belief identified earlier, so the test produces learning about your audience and not just a winner.
- 04Test
Run controlled message tests
We run randomized message experiments with online panels, email campaigns or live digital channels, measuring changes in comprehension, belief and stated or observed behavior. Where possible we measure real actions such as click-through, sign-up or inquiry, since these predict market response more reliably than stated preference.
- 05Scale
Codify the messaging system
We translate results into a messaging framework with core claims, proof points, framing guidance and language to avoid, written for the agencies and internal teams who will use it. We also set up an ongoing testing cadence so messaging keeps improving as audiences and markets change.
Deliverables.
What changes.
Who engages us.
We work with chief marketing officers, brand and communications leaders, product marketers and association executives who need to change how a market understands them. Common triggers include a repositioning, a new product category the market does not yet understand, an industry facing negative or outdated perceptions, an upcoming education or awareness campaign, and agency briefs that keep producing work leadership cannot evaluate with confidence.
Industries
Beyond the balance sheet.
Clear, accurate messaging helps customers make better decisions with less confusion. When an industry's real benefits are misunderstood, people may avoid products or services that would genuinely help them. Our research aims to close that gap honestly, correcting misconceptions without overstating claims. Employees benefit from a story they can tell with conviction, and communities benefit when public understanding rests on evidence rather than marketing noise.
Frequently asked questions.
How is brand messaging research different from a focus group?
Focus groups are useful for exploring language and reactions, and we sometimes use them early. But group settings encourage conformity, and stated preferences rarely predict behavior. Brand messaging research combines qualitative exploration with quantitative belief measurement and randomized message tests, so conclusions rest on how people actually respond to framing rather than what they say they prefer.
What does message framing mean in practice?
Framing is how the same fact is presented. A benefit can be described as something gained or a loss avoided, compared to a familiar reference point, attributed to a peer or an expert, or made concrete with an example. Behavioral science shows these choices affect attention, belief and action. We test framing deliberately rather than leaving it to chance.
Can you work with our existing agency?
Yes, and we usually prefer to. Agencies bring creative craft and channel expertise. We bring audience research, behavioral framing and experimental design. Our deliverables are written to be used by agency teams, and we often collaborate on variants so that tested messages are also executable creative. Agencies also gain a stronger basis for defending creative choices with leadership.
Do you measure real behavior or only attitudes?
Both, with a preference for behavior. Attitude and belief measures tell you why a message works. Observed actions, such as clicks, inquiries or sign-ups in a live channel, tell you whether it works. Combining them gives you a messaging system you can trust and keep improving. Behavioral measures also reveal when a message is liked but does not move anyone to act.
