Founder & CEO Coaching
Our founder and CEO coaching helps leaders of investor-backed companies grow into the role their company now requires, building judgment, leadership teams and board relationships through the transitions that come with scale.
The problem behind the problem.
The skills that make a founder successful at the start are not the skills the company needs at every later stage. Early on, founders win through speed, conviction and personal involvement in every decision. As the company grows from a small team to a scaling organization, those same habits can become bottlenecks: decisions queue up behind the founder, senior hires struggle to find their footing and the culture begins to depend on one person's energy. Founders often recognize the problem before they know what to do about it, and the people around them may be reluctant to say it plainly.
CEOs of private equity portfolio companies face a different version of the same pressure. They must deliver an aggressive plan on a fixed timeline, manage a board with sharp expectations and lead teams through change, often while integrating acquisitions or replacing executives. Investors frequently see leadership as the main risk to a plan but have limited ways to help directly. Founder and CEO coaching grounded in behavioral science and operating experience offers a confidential space to build the self-awareness, skills and support systems that leading at scale demands.
How we deliver founder & ceo coaching.
- 01Observe
Understand the leader in context
Coaching begins with understanding the leader, the company and the stage it is in. We conduct confidential interviews with the leader and, with their agreement, with co-founders, executives and board members. Where possible we observe leadership meetings and board sessions to see how the leader actually shows up, not only how they describe themselves.
- 02Signal
Find the behaviors that matter most
We use validated assessments and structured multi-rater feedback, alongside indicators such as decision latency, executive turnover and engagement data, to find the small number of leadership behaviors that most affect company performance. This keeps coaching focused on what matters at this stage rather than on generic leadership development.
- 03Design
Build a focused coaching plan
Together with the leader, we define a coaching plan with clear goals tied to company priorities: delegating to a new executive team, building a productive board relationship, preparing for a raise or exit, or navigating a founder transition. Each goal is translated into specific behaviors the leader will practice, with prompts built into existing routines.
- 04Test
Practice, feedback and adjustment
Leaders try new behaviors in real situations: a delegated decision, a difficult board conversation, a reorganized leadership meeting. We review what happened, gather feedback and adjust. Periodic check-ins with the leader's team and board, with consent, show whether changes are visible to others and making a difference to the company.
- 05Scale
Extend to the leadership team
Sustainable leadership at scale depends on a strong team, not a single person. As individual coaching progresses, we often extend the work to the executive team: clarifying roles and decision rights, building psychological safety and productive conflict, and establishing operating rhythms that let the company grow without routing every decision through the founder or CEO.
Deliverables.
What changes.
Who engages us.
We coach founders and CEOs of venture-backed startups, typically from seed through Series C, and CEOs of private equity portfolio companies, including first-time CEOs and leaders who have recently stepped up from a functional role. Engagements are commissioned by the leader, the board or an investor. Common moments include rapid scaling from Series A to C, the first 100 days under new ownership, a founder transition to a new CEO or chair role, preparation for a major raise or exit, and periods of strain between leader and board.
Industries
Beyond the balance sheet.
How a founder or CEO leads shapes the daily experience of everyone in the company and, increasingly, the customers and communities it serves. Our founder and CEO coaching pays attention to sustainable pace, ethical decision-making and the wellbeing of the leader as a person, not only as an asset. Leaders who are self-aware and supported build healthier cultures, retain good people and make choices that hold up to scrutiny as their companies grow in influence.
Frequently asked questions.
Is the coaching confidential if our investor pays for it?
Yes. We agree on confidentiality boundaries with the leader and the sponsor before coaching begins. Typically the sponsor receives information about engagement and progress on agreed goals, but not the content of coaching conversations. This structure protects the trust that makes coaching work while giving investors confidence that their support is being used well.
How is this different from having an experienced mentor?
Mentors share their own experience, which can be valuable. Coaching is more structured and more focused on the leader's own development. We draw on behavioral science, validated assessment and coaching methods, combined with founder and operating experience, including building and grant-funding startups and running product, sales and partnerships. Many leaders benefit from both a mentor and a coach.
Can you help with a founder transition?
Yes. Founder transitions, whether to a chair role, a product or technical role, or out of the company, are among the most sensitive moments in a company's life. We help founders clarify what they want and where they add the most value, support the board in designing a fair process, and coach the incoming leader. Our goal is a transition that respects the founder and protects the company.
How long does founder and CEO coaching typically last?
Most engagements run for several months, with sessions every week or two and periodic reviews with agreed stakeholders. The length depends on the goals and the stage of the company. Some leaders continue with lighter-touch support through major milestones such as a fundraise, acquisition or exit. We review progress regularly and end the engagement when goals are met.
