Management Team Assessment
Our management team assessment gives investors a rigorous, evidence-based view of the leaders they are backing, using structured interviews, validated instruments and behavioral observation to evaluate capability, key-person risk and readiness to execute.
The problem behind the problem.
Investors routinely say they back people as much as businesses, yet management evaluation is often the least structured part of diligence. Impressions form during polished management presentations and a few dinners. Reference checks reach colleagues chosen by the executive. Background checks confirm credentials but say little about how a leader makes decisions under pressure, develops a team or adapts when the plan changes. These gaps matter most in exactly the situations where investors depend on management: aggressive growth plans, founder transitions and operational turnarounds.
Teams also matter as systems, not just as collections of individuals. A strong CEO may be surrounded by a leadership team that defers rather than challenges. A capable CFO may be one departure away from leaving the business without institutional knowledge. Key-person risk, succession gaps and team dynamics affect value as directly as customer churn. A management team assessment grounded in psychometrics and behavioral research gives deal teams and boards an evidence base for decisions about leadership, retention arrangements and support, rather than relying on instinct alone.
How we deliver management team assessment.
- 01Observe
Structured interviews and observation
We conduct structured, competency-based interviews with the CEO and key executives, focused on past behavior in situations relevant to the investment plan. Where possible, we observe the team working together, for example in a planning session or operating review, to see how decisions are actually made, how conflict is handled and who carries influence.
- 02Signal
Validated measures and team data
We use validated psychometric instruments and structured multi-rater input to assess leadership style, decision-making and team dynamics. Where available, we also review people data such as tenure, turnover by manager and engagement results to identify signals of leadership effectiveness and key-person dependence across the organization.
- 03Design
Map capability to the plan
Findings are mapped against what the investment plan will require of each leader and of the team as a whole. We identify strengths to build on, capability gaps, succession and key-person risks, and the specific leadership behaviors most important to the first 100 days. Recommendations cover coaching, hiring, role changes and retention arrangements.
- 04Test
Validate with evidence over time
Assessment is a hypothesis about how leaders will perform. After close, we help boards and operating partners track a small set of leadership indicators and observe performance against the plan, so early concerns can be addressed through support rather than discovered through missed results months later.
- 05Scale
Develop the team that will deliver
We turn assessment into practical development for each leader: individual executive coaching, team coaching focused on decision-making and accountability, and succession plans that reduce key-person risk. This builds a leadership team capable of executing the value creation plan and of running the business well through exit and beyond.

What changes.
Who engages us.
We work with private equity deal partners and operating partners, venture capital investors leading significant rounds, family offices and boards of portfolio companies. Assessments are typically commissioned during confirmatory diligence, in the first 100 days after close, before a founder transition or CEO succession, ahead of a major acquisition or integration, or when performance diverges from plan and the board needs an objective view of leadership capacity. We also assess leadership teams at companies preparing for a sale.
Industries
Beyond the balance sheet.
Leadership quality shapes the working lives of every employee in a company. A management team assessment conducted with care and transparency can be developmental for the executives involved, not only evaluative. We hold to professional standards in psychometric testing, protect participant confidentiality appropriately and give leaders useful feedback. Better leadership produces better places to work, more thoughtful treatment of customers and stronger relationships with the communities where companies operate.
Frequently asked questions.
How does this differ from executive search firm assessments?
Search firm assessments are usually designed to compare candidates for a role. Our management team assessment evaluates an existing team against the specific requirements of an investment plan, with attention to team dynamics, key-person risk and development needs. We use research-grade methods from psychometrics and behavioral science, and we connect findings directly to coaching and value creation after close.
Will management teams feel threatened by the assessment?
Some initial caution is normal. We explain the purpose clearly, share how findings will be used and give each executive meaningful feedback. Many leaders find the process valuable, particularly when it leads to coaching and development support. Handled well, the assessment builds trust between management and new owners rather than eroding it.
Can you assess a founder-led company preparing for professional management?
Yes, and this is one of the most important uses of the service. Founder transitions carry significant key-person risk and emotional weight. We assess the founder's strengths and the roles where they add the most value, the readiness of the broader team, and the gaps a new leader or new hires must fill, then help design a transition that preserves what made the company successful.
How long does a management team assessment take?
Scope depends on the size of the team and the timeline of the deal. A focused assessment of a CEO and a few direct reports can fit within a confirmatory diligence period. A broader assessment of the full leadership team, including team observation and multi-rater input, is often conducted in the first 100 days after close, when access is easier.
