Human-Computer Interaction Consulting

Human-computer interaction consulting brings the science of how people perceive, think and act to the design of technology. We help organizations design software, AI tools and complex systems that fit human capabilities rather than fighting them.

The challenge

The problem behind the problem.

Technology is often designed around what the system can do rather than how people think. Interfaces expose internal data structures, require users to remember codes, bury critical information beneath menus and present alerts so frequently that people learn to ignore them. In complex settings, such as clinical systems, financial platforms, operations dashboards and enterprise software, these design choices have real consequences: errors, workarounds, slower work, frustration, longer training and, sometimes, safety risks.

New technologies raise the stakes further. AI assistants, automated recommendations and conversational interfaces introduce new questions about trust, explanation, error recovery and the appropriate division of work between people and machines. People may over-rely on automation or reject it entirely. Human-computer interaction consulting applies decades of research on perception, attention, memory, decision-making and interaction design to these problems, so systems support human judgment instead of undermining it, and so people remain meaningfully in control of consequential decisions.

Our approach

How we deliver human-computer interaction consulting.

  1. 01Observe

    Analyze people, tasks and context

We study how people actually work with the system, through contextual inquiry, cognitive task analysis and workflow observation. We identify the goals, decisions, information needs and interruptions that shape interaction, along with the environmental constraints, such as time pressure, noise or multitasking, that affect attention and error.

  2. 02Signal

    Measure interaction breakdowns

Interaction logs, error reports and support data reveal where users hesitate, override, repeat or abandon. For AI and automation features, we examine acceptance and override patterns to detect over-reliance or distrust. These signals are combined with expert review against usability heuristics and cognitive load principles to identify the most consequential problems.

  3. 03Design

    Design for human capabilities

We redesign interactions based on HCI principles: clear mental models, recognition over recall, meaningful feedback, error prevention and recovery, appropriate alerting and progressive disclosure. For AI features, we design explanations, confidence signals and easy correction so users can calibrate trust. Designs are documented as patterns your teams can reuse.

  4. 04Test

    Evaluate with representative users

Prototypes are evaluated through think-aloud usability testing, task performance measurement and, where relevant, simulation of high-pressure scenarios. We measure accuracy, efficiency, workload and trust calibration, and compare alternatives with controlled studies when decisions are high stakes. Results guide refinement before development investment grows and before design choices become expensive to reverse.

  5. 05Scale

    Build HCI capability

We help teams adopt design systems, interaction guidelines and review practices grounded in HCI research, and provide training for product, engineering and executive teams. Post-launch measurement confirms that redesigns reduce errors and effort in real use, and establishes a feedback loop for continuous improvement as the system and its users evolve.

Who we serve

Who engages us.

Our human-computer interaction consulting supports chief product and technology officers, design leaders, clinical informatics officers, AI product teams and founders. Clients include enterprise software firms, digital health companies, health systems implementing new clinical tools, financial services platforms and universities. Engagements often begin with a complex system rollout, an AI feature launch, persistent user errors, alert fatigue, or a need for independent expert review before a major investment.

Industries

Impact lens

Beyond the balance sheet.

Good interaction design makes technology humane. Clinicians spend more time with patients when systems reduce unnecessary clicks. Employees experience less frustration and fatigue when tools fit their work. Users of AI systems are better protected when interfaces support appropriate trust and easy correction. We advocate for accessibility, transparency and human oversight, especially where technology influences consequential decisions about health, finances or opportunity.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is human-computer interaction?

Human-computer interaction is the interdisciplinary field that studies how people use technology and how to design technology that works well for them. It draws on cognitive psychology, computer science, design and social science. HCI research has produced well-tested principles about perception, attention, memory, error and interaction that apply to any software, device or AI system.

How is HCI consulting different from UX design?

There is significant overlap. HCI consulting places more emphasis on the underlying science of human cognition and on rigorous evaluation methods, which is especially valuable for complex, high-stakes or novel systems. We often work alongside in-house UX designers, providing research, expert review and evaluation expertise while they lead day-to-day design and delivery.

How do you design AI features that people trust appropriately?

We aim for calibrated trust, where people rely on AI when it is accurate and question it when it is not. That requires clear explanation of what the system knows, signals of confidence or uncertainty, visible sources, easy ways to correct or override, and testing with real users to see how they actually respond. Over-trust can be as harmful as distrust.

Can you help with alert fatigue in clinical or operational systems?

Yes. Alert fatigue is a classic HCI problem: when people see too many low-value alerts, they begin to ignore all of them, including the critical ones. We analyze alert data, observe how people respond, and redesign alert logic, prioritization and presentation, then evaluate the changes to confirm important alerts receive attention while unnecessary interruptions decline.
